How does the GPL pertain to server based applications? I am reading up on the GNU General Public License (GPL), one piece of software I would like to use is published under the GPL. The GPL requires that any software that makes use of the GPL distributed package is its self open source under a compatible GPL. But I am going to use the software in a server based application (part of a web backend architecture). So I will not be distributing the software (as it is a server). Pilots: Do Glider Pilot's Licenses work internationally? I am spending several months in Germany, and have taken an interest in flying. There is a small airport near where I am staying which offers gliding lessons and the opportunity to get a GPL (Glider Pilot's License). My question is: if I take the test / get the license here in Germany, will I be able to use it after I arrive back home in the USA? I know the standards are different (needing flight hours and such) and it would be a shame if it didn't work.

Must redistribute GPL modifications on Website Software? I am thinking of modifying phpBB for a website. If I am asked to provide my modifications am I required to do so. According to the FAQs it looks like if the site is accessed by the public I do and if it is not, only for internal use, I don't. Also does the license only cover the code or does it also cover images and such added to the site as well. Can anyone clarify here is the quote from the FAQs: A company is running a modified version of a GPL'ed program on a web site. Does the GPL say they must release their modified sources? The GPL permits anyone to make a modified version and use it without ever distributing it to others. What this company is doing is a special case of that. Can I use GPL/GNU software like ultravnc and tightvnc for a Big Company? Like a company of 1000-1500 employees. I'll be using it as a back-up remote access software since WinXp remote desktop software doesn't let the end-user see what I am doing and so. Distribution of Open Source (GPL) Program? If I use and modify a an open source (GPL) program to create an online site. For example, I make a modification to PhpBB (forum). Somebody uses the site, and ask me for the source code to that site. Am I obligated under the open source license to give them the source code? How can companies use Copyright to protect software when the source code is never seen by anyone? I can understand a Copyright license for source code that is published (e.g. the GPL) because its easy to see exactly what's being protected against copying, not to mention it protects against against a very specific threat -- using the source code to compile your own unauthorized software. On the other hand, companies that don't open their source code should theoretically only be able to enforce copyright laws against someone who's accessed & stolen source code and used it to compile unauthorized software. I don't understand how it can be used to combat piracy when then source code was never involved in the act.

I plan to develop a free/open source CD/DVD mastering software in the future with the following features: 1. Burn all types of discs (data, audio, and video CD/DVD) 2. What VoIP software does conference calls? I need four things in a VoIP software client. 1) Must do conference calling (multiple phone calls). 2) Must be easy to use, or is able to work with other services. 3) Must either be cross-platform, or has clients for Windows, Linux, and Mac. 4) GPL or similar licensing preferred. I know Skype can do conference calls, is relatively easy, and has clients for Windows, Mac, and Linux -- but it's not Free Software. Google Talk is free, but does not have a Mac or Linux client. Free Icon Pack Licenses?
