Could I use the GNU GPL license for school work like essays, writings, etc? Would it be possible for me to use the GNU General Public License (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html) on a piece of work for school, such as an essay, narrative, writing, etc. and have it be recognized? I am currently 18, and I would like my published works to be prevented from on-the-page editing which marrs the writing (such as markups, etc.)
How to Backup and restore partition over wifi? using only GNU/GPL software? I know about PARTIMAGE, but is there a bootable CD that includes it? and being able to setup wifi card. Maybe some LIVE CD that may be easily modifiable so I can have wifi, and partimage on this. Please suggest me options. Ultimate Boot CD has linux and partimage, but I do not know how to enable wifi so I can restore partition stored in remote server. (needles to say that Norton Ghost or any commercial application is out of question)
My software uses a library that is GNU GPL. Is my software also GPL? Hiya, I got someone to write a piece of code for me that was meant to be proprietary software (i.e restricted to my terms). I have since found out that it uses a library that was written under the GNU GPL license. My question is whether this whole program is now automatically open source / free (is the whole thing under the GNU GPL now?)? Would be great if people can back up their answers with some references! Thanks!
It is mandatory ot give credits under GNU/GPL license? If I use any piece of software released under the GNU/GPL license to build a website.. It is mandatory to mention the developer in the page (at the bottom, in a dedicated page)? This question goes beyond the fact that it is a nice touch to do it, but I wan to know if it is legally mandatory to do it Thanks !
GNU/GPL policy help please? This is straight from the GNU/GPL website; http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLCommercially Question; If I use a piece of software that has been obtained under the GNU GPL, am I allowed to modify the original code into a new program, then distribute and sell that new program commercially? Answer: You are allowed to sell copies of the modified program commercially, but only under the terms of the GNU GPL. Thus, for instance, you must make the source code available to the users of the program as described in the GPL, and they must be allowed to redistribute and modify it as described in the GPL. These requirements are the condition for including the GPL-covered code you received in a program of your own. My question: Can I only have to provide the source code to customers who pay for the program? I want to start a web design business and want to build my own e commerce cart from an existing one, of course I would update the interface by A LOT, and add in some extra features! But if possible I only want paying customers to be able to use it! The policy is kinda confusing to me, because im only fifteen and dont get all this legal mumbo jumbo! Thanks for the help!
Looking for GNU GPL Programs? Stellar programs, preferably GNU with GPL's.(General Public License) In the categories of Media(specifically, something to crawl for streaming video/audio), Browsers, Communication/networking, and generally useful/cool programs. A link will suffice, but background information is appreciated. Thanks :)
Can I use GPL/GNU software like ultravnc and tightvnc for a Big Company? Like a company of 1000-1500 employees. I'll be using it as a back-up remote access software since WinXp remote desktop software doesn't let the end-user see what I am doing and so. Would i be able to use it without having to buy a special enterprise license or so? Or is there some other legal Issue? I did noticed realvnc had an enterprise license for it but these other 2 do not offer any at there website that im aware of.
Can I sell a business which is based on a software that uses the GNU Public License (GPL)? I created a commercial web site, and the software I developed to run the site uses GPL'd libraries. As I understand the GPL, it's okay to make profit of such a site without opening the source code I wrote, but what if I want to sell the entire business to someone else? Does it constitute a software distribution, and therefore requires me to open up the source to the general public?
what is the consequence of violating GNU GPL? how can anyonje prove it? what is the consequence of a website or company taking a gpl code, modifying it enough so that it doesn't resemble the original gpl code, and offering proprietary copy? how can anyone prove that this new software uses gpl code since its in binary format? even worse is websites running GPL codes, they are completely server side, and how can they prove that its running gpl? the host doesn't have to open up his server. what constitutes as violation of the GPL? how much modification or basically paraphrasing the codes into his own constitute as violation ? for instance, you read the phpBB code and you write a really similar version, but the codes are written from scratch or a small portion of it. i think this is where GPL really breaks down, and there are thousands of firms violating it right now making billions.
Does the GPL require the source code to be made public? What I'd like to know is if I were to release a small app I'm making under the GPL/GNU license do I have to make the original source code available? I know if I do make it available anyone who modifies the code and distributes the program needs to make the source code available, but what if I don't release the original source code?
What is the best open source software for...? Im looking for an open source software under the gnu/gpl licence that would be good for ecommerce and a main page and where its easy to add things like menu items etc and also would have a range of different themes for it. Please do not say joomla as i am fimiliar with it and is not suitable. Thanks
What is a Free Software license that I can use for my software that releases its source code? (i.e. GPL)? I've been developing software for years, but I've never really given consideration to releasing my source code with copyright. I know that a lot of Open Source software uses the GNU Public License (GPL) and modified versions of it, and I would use this, but I want to restrict people from taking my source code and publicly re-distributing their modified versions and calling it their own. It would be alright to modify it for their own personal use, but I do not want people using the source code of my game engine that I'm writing from scratch and using it for their own games without saying it came from me--but basically, I'd just like to release the source code under a license restricting people from publicly releasing their modified versions. What is the best license to use in this case for my software before I complete it and release it?
How does the GPL pertain to server based applications? I am reading up on the GNU General Public License (GPL), one piece of software I would like to use is published under the GPL. The GPL requires that any software that makes use of the GPL distributed package is its self open source under a compatible GPL. But I am going to use the software in a server based application (part of a web backend architecture). So I will not be distributing the software (as it is a server). Does anyone know how to interpret the license in this case? Can I use the software legally since there is no "distribution"? Though I will charge for the web service being provided. Thanks, David
Does anybody know a Free PHP calendar for website? I need an online calendar which could be manageable by diferent users just like Thyme at http://www.extrosoft.com/.. Can someone give me any GNU/ GPL PHP calendar which is available on the internet? I'm looking for a professional interface/GUI.
What are copyright laws? I am a software developer and a writer. As, I am deeply influenced by free software philosophy, I am releasing all my softwares under GNU GPL and articles under Creative Commons licences. Who is the actual copyright holder of the works licenced under these licences??? Do I hold the right to file a law suit if someone breaches the terms of these license? Please give me a very detailed description about the copyright...
Free/Open-source InDesign? Is there a free or open-sourced piece of software similar to Adobe InDesign? Please keep in mind I am looking for free and legal software. GNU/GPL is recommended. Thanks!

Open Source? Which is/are the best Open Source (GNU/GPL) AntiVirus and AntiSpyware you know. Please share your experience.
Does the public domain allow me to do this? I am writing free software whose name I won't disclose (because the domain name for it's open and I want it but haven't bought it yet :P) and have decided that I will release the software under the GNU GPL v3. I want the artwork to be released under the public domain if it lets me restrict others from trademarking it / patenting it / copyrighting it. Does it actually allow you to do this? Or do I need to release it under a license of my own? Here's what I wrote so far for a Frequently Asked Question on my site: What are my rights with this software? [Product name] is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software">free software</a> (free as in freedom) released under the GNU General Public License v3. The artwork for [Product name]—the software's background, icon, and logo, as well as the official website design—are released into the public domain without any respective owner and may be used in any works, including both personal and commercial, provided that no trademarks or patents are applied to the artwork unmodified and that the right to the use of the artwork in relation to [Product name] (including the use of it within the software, modified or not) may not be ceased, enforced to the extent of applicable law. Can somebody experienced tell me if this is okay for me to do? Or does the public domain prevent you from doing this? I'm fine with releasing it under a license if I have to but I want to see if I can do this first. Another question I have is whether I need to include the restriction of copyrighting/trademarking/patenting the unmodified work or whether the public domain already takes care of that.
(Easy for a C guru): Explain some of this C code to me so I can understand it better...? (This is code under the GNU GPL, FYI) Explain this line of code: if (fsize > checktree->file->size) cmpresult = 1; I'm struggling with all this pointer/structure stuff, and when I see lines like this, I have NO IDEA how to interpret it and understand what it's doing. What specifically does "checktree->file->size" actually do? From the same file I am looking at, there is this line as well: file_t **checkmatch(filetree_t **root, filetree_t *checktree, file_t *file) { What exactly is the purpose of each component of this line, and what is the purpose of what I assume are "pointers to pointers" denoted by two asterisks?

Is there a free version of Borland Delphi? I use Borland Delphi 7, and I really like it. I've already released some softwares I've designed in it under the GNU-GPL. But... isn't it illegal to use a commercial IDE to create free softwares? If it's possible, I'd rather like to use a free version of Delphi. Do you know any solution? Colanth wrote: "BTW, if it were illegal to sell software written in a commercial IDE, only the people who wrote the IDEs would be allowed to sell software." I said I released it under GNU-GPL license, so I don't sell my software - it's free & open-source.
How do you license a website which also has server side code!? If I have a website which also has server side code, and I'd like to publish it's source code and everything... Should I use the CC license for the site itself and the GNU GPL for the code behind? Also, is it good enough if I just say on the homepage that all my software is under a certain license and then not worry about adding "Copyright (C) 2009 My Name ..." to every code file of every software on the site!? Question Refining: "Should I use the CC license for the site itself and the GNU GPL for the code behind?" as in... instead of using only one license for the whole thing. _____________________________________ In response to Colanth: So, the answer is Yes!? GNU GPL for code behind and CC for WebSite content. And by what you're saying, if I just add to each file the license itself, that would be good enough, right?
dafont word mark font question..? ok im a student and dont know the laws of fonts. One of my aunts owns her own business. So she has hired me to design the business' word mark and logo. I found four great fonts that i want to use. On the right top side there are three kinds of fonts available..'Public domain / GNU GPL' 'Free' 'Free for personal use' One thing i know is that nothing is really free. So my question is.. What do i need to do to use all four fonts in my aunts logo and word mark? so that everything can be legal.

Can someone give me step-by-step instructions for installing a SigmaTel Driver in Ubuntu Linux? Okay, so I have Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1501. The sound worked at first, but when I got the Wireless connections to work, the sound just became a crackling sound. I need help, because I'm a total Linux newbie. I sort of know how to work the terminal, but not very well. I have the SigmaTel driver stuff on /home/jfreekao/Desktop/irda4210/ and I don't know how to install it. Here's the ReadMe. I don't understand it. These driver files are here to help you get started. You will at least need to install the driver into the kernel loadable modules directory for IrDA (.../kernel/drivers/net/irda) and then insert the module (insmod). The following modules are incompatible with this driver and on some versions of Linux, these modules must be removed from the kernel: ir-usb irda-usb You might need to insmod the "irda" module before starting. Before running "make," check the values of LINUX_VERSION, INLUDEDIR and MODPATH. Before releasing anything, update the IRDA4210_VERSION string, which gets embedded in the module. All devices supported by this driver require a firmware patch to run. Failing to install a patch into the device (or installing the wrong patch) can result in a lockup of the USB bus (and the entire system). For your protection, the driver will not allow you to open the device unless you first apply the patch. The "stir42xx" utility in the "tools" directory will install a patchfile. The patch files are firmware that run in the device and are not available with this distribution, since they are not covered under the GNU GPL. Run "stir42xx --help" for more information. The "sgtlpatch" script attemps to determine the version of the attached device and will select the appropriate patch file that it finally passes to the stir42xx utility. My situation is a lot like the user who was requesting help in this topic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=116941 Please help me install this!
Open-source, but non-commercial license? Somebody already asked this, but did not get an answer. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AriIwpNNoZ7EBLlcjfMasvQjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20091228220458AAuK0SD) The GNU GPL allows commercial use. I am looking for a software license, that allows editing and adapting the source code, but not for commercial use, meaning not adaptation of the source code for any program that is meant to be sold. Something like the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/), but for software. Please help! I don´t think I can edit the GNU GPL: Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed. This is written in the very beginning of the license.

How to draft a software development agreement that uses some Open Source components? I'm trying to draft a simple software development service agreement where the work involves building a software that shall be using some open source components licensed under Creative Commons License. So, I'm wondering if the one i drafted below is sufficient? 7 INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS 7.3 Certain right, title, and interest in and to the Software modules as set out in Schedule 1, including rights in copyright that may subsist therein, shall belong to the Customer, except for the part of the Software that are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0), or GNU General Public License (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html) or any other licenses stipulated in Open Source Initiative (OSI) (http://www.opensource.org/licenses). Hi deonejuan, Thus, in my agreement, is my Clause 7.3 sufficient?

Computer/Internet Related - Where should I start and how should I go about it? Hi. A quick background, and I'll be on my way. Every since I got my first computer some odd years back (10+), I've been overly interested with them. I know pretty much how to gut them and put them back together due to just ripping it apart. I'm fairly well at putting anything together I take apart. Anyway, I lost interest in pretty much everything. Now I'm interested in too much. I want to do everything from installing hardware, making PCBs, CAD, learning the in's and out's of various applications and operating systems, programming for software as well as the web; it's just too much for one person to learn. Well, at least all at once. So I am asking where I should probably start, and how I should go about it. I do not have a ton of funds at the moment; as I am sure many of you have noticed, the economy is shot. Anyway. I am not for piracy; regardless of what media and/or content is being pirated (e.g. music, movies, software, etc). I like free stuff, just as most people do. I want to take what I learn and apply it to help everyone. As an example; if I spent 5 years of my life creating an operating system I would still let others use it freely, as well as grant GPL rights. Not everyone has $XXX.XX to pay for that top notch software. My main objective at the moment, at least I think/feel that it is, is to learn how to create a website from the ground up. I want to be able to make multi-page sites with wiki, forums, a chat, blog, private tracker (yes, for torrents, but only for freeware alternatives) etc. I want to set it up so that I may let others register, as certain this would need to be moderated, as well as credit given. I need to know enough so that I can setup analyst, ads for supporting it, possible PayPal or comparable for donations. If you think I'm contradicting myself, you don't know the difference in donation and required payment. I've donated a bit, it's always nice to help someone who does something worth while. (Rambling on... Sorry.) Anyway. Answering the very basic question at hand will do, but if you know of the exact languages I will need to learn, programs to make layouts or to learn the skills required, books, etc I will appreciate any such information. Also, please don't say something stupid like "Google it", any variant or similarity. I search a lot, and have found a bit of information, but some of it is a little advance and not for a beginner. Thank you. I apologize for any errors, etc. PS - If you do not know what freeware or GPL is, you should just Google it real quick. Not contradicting myself. Resources: http://www.gnu.org/ http://www.fsf.org/ (Free Software Foundation) Summary: What do I need to learn in order to do all the web related stuff I previously mentioned. What languages/scripts. How should I go about learning them; i.e. order, where to find info, etc? Hope that's good enough.
