Does this seem right and sound like a summary too you? Firefox and Internet Explorer ..,? Since the relative demise of Netscape as the last serious competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) three years ago, most of us simply take our Microsoft browser for granted--warts and all. Virtually every Web site is optimized for IE, and every copy of Microsoft Windows sold includes a version of IE. And with total market saturation come opportunists: criminal hackers who use Microsoft vulnerabilities to take control of your operating system, steal your identity, or spread spam. But out of the ashes of Netscape came the Mozilla Organization. Spun off from AOL, which purchased Netscape a few years ago, the Mozilla Organization has been quietly creating a brand-new Internet browser from the ground up--and sharing its code with anyone and everyone. The benefit of this new browser project is that unlike IE, this open-source code runs independently of your operating system, so a flaw in the browser software won't necessarily expose your entire computer. Another source of Internet vulnerabilities lies within ActiveX technology, tiny scripts that automatically download when you visit certain Web pages. In most cases, they're good, adding music or animation to a page. But in some cases, criminal hackers have tweaked the code to damage your computer. Microsoft recently added a prompt to IE so that you can accept or deny ActiveX scripts. Firefox doesn't use ActiveX technology, which means that a few Web sites might not appear as their designers intended (although we were hard-pressed to find a site that didn't work because of this during our testing of Firefox). While Mozilla offers a whole suite of secure, independent, open-source Internet tools, it recently streamlined its browser component and named it Firefox. Since last summer, we've been testing Firefox, and, frankly, we're sold: Firefox is just as fast and just as easy as Internet Explorer--and more importantly, it's much more secure.

Why does Microsoft put so much effort into Internet Explorer? Microsoft is a for-profit publicly traded company. What financial gain does it get by dominating the market for FREE web browsers? Mozilla/Firefox open source, collaboration, add-ons, etc browser makes sense to me. Google Chrome and delivering content-rich pages and web based apps makes sense to me. Microsoft's efforts to continue to dominate this market does not make sense to me. Seems like a waste of money. Anybody want to clue me in?
Need help with Windows XP after system crash.? Some time ago now my p.c. crashed, it is working now but has a few problems. 1/ Double clicking (or selecting the icon and pressing enter) for Internet Explorer only opens up a "shortcut" icon for Internet Explorer. 2/ Internet Explorer will not connect to any web page, even though the "Wireless Connection" icon in my toolbar reports connected. (iTunes will not connect to internet either) What can I do to fix this problem? Should I try an Open Source browser? Some more details, I also have a rather old and slow laptop and an even older and slower desktop. They can both get on the internet (eventually) through that same router, I uninstalled IE7 and installed Firefox but the browser still just sits there with a blank page, and the status bar says something like "cannot find page". I cannot find the XP disc at the moment to re-install windows. Does anyone know if going completely open source (e.g. Ubuntu along with Firefox, etc.) might solve this, and how would I do that?
Can i use my 27" LCD tv as a computer monitor? I hooked up my packard bell PC to the tv, it has the appropriate sockey for PC input and audio input. It works and shows the loading screen for windows but right when it should come to the login screen i get "unknown source" and i cant see anything. Funnily enough i can guess at where the mouse cursor is and i managed to login and even accidentally open an internet browser, but i cant see any of this. Can anyone help me?
Is there anywhere I can go online where the tentacles of Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. have no reach? I mean, why can't the internet be free and open, every site I go to has ads by Google, links to Facebook, references to Twitter, everytime I turn on the tv, it's Google this, Facebook that, or Twitter that, I'm especially sick of the unblinking eye of Google being involved in just about everything that I do online, why can't we have an open source search engine, just like we have open source browsers that is non proprietary and is the default browser in the majority of open source search engines like Firefox, why does a private enterprise have to control EVERYTHING???
I just had a virus and now my internet won't work, what is wrong? I have windows XP and I accidentally downloaded a few days ago. I downloaded avast anti-virus shortly after that and fixed up my computer for the most part, it was still running slower than usual but I wasn't getting pop-ups or anything. Last night I used my computer and the internet was working fine. I turned off my computer and in the morning I could not connect! All of my computers are connected to the same internet source (the blue linksys box with the antennae) and they all are connected, the only one that is not connected is my computer that had the virus. Also, it says my computer is connected to the internet, i just can't open up aim, msn messenger, or the internet browsers. I use a program called steam to connect to friends online and for some reason I can use that program to talk to friends over the internet, but I can't play any of the online games it provides, I can only use the online chat function... I'm baffled and I don't know what to do. I tried uninstalling avast, although that didn't do anything. Help?
Shootout of Operating Systems.? I have asked many questions regarding windows only. Now, I want to go further than windows. I am not really that happy with my current Windows XP Home. I have a 1GB RAM, 1.66 GHz Intel Atom Processor and a 160GB HDD. Now, Windows XP isn't all that appealing to me. I want some real good looking user interface, and above all, speed. I also do not want to spend money. That would mean obtaining Windows Vista illegaly which I don't know how to do. Are any of the free open source operating systems good or better than Vista? I want the clear, detailed differences between the following: Windows Vista, OpenSolaris, Solaris, Fedora, Linux Mint, Ubuntu. Between the Linux Group of Operating Sytems example: Ubuntu VS Mint VS Fedora. and Sun Group example: OpenSolaris VS Solaris. What I need the OS for: Light-weight open source programs Internet (opera 10 b3 browser) Which will be most suitable for my need? After all the debating, if the answer remains Vista, then how do I get it for no cost?

When Mozilla Firefox tries to access the internet...? Kind of a weird question here, but here it goes: when you open Mozilla Firefox and access your home page, just what exactly is going on behind the scenes as your browser completes your request? What I mean is this, since Firefox is Open Source, is it possible to pinpoint the code it uses when accessing websites? Thank you very much in advance.
How do I make a javascript Modal window open as a Home page? As a click though internet policy page, I'm tring to get Firefox to open without the address bar. I'm not concerned about circumvention, the intended patrons have little computer skills. I have studied the source to security.symantec.com, but it only opens a Modal window after you click. I want it open that way as the home page, then after one clicks agree, it will become a regular browser window. I know little about Javascript, so a cut and paste answer would be greate.
Explorer Crashes On Vista When I Open Folders Containing MPEG2 Files, They Still Play, Think I Need Codecs? I recently bought a Sony HandyCam HDR-SR12E and in SD mode it records as MPEG2 format, which is cool. On my XP system, I have no problems, and I have no errors with MPEG2 as long as I use the Picture Motion Browser software, but anytime I try to open a folder containing these MPEG2 files, I'll get multiple "rundll32" error messages, saying that it's stopped responding and must be closed. This includes; opening folders containing MPEG2 files, using products such as Veoh to try to upload the files, and Windows Movie Maker, (which will both crash as soon as I try to select any of my MPEG2 files). Apparantly, from some research, this is due to needing some Codecs, (I've heard of them, but not sure exactly how they work), and that I need to get some of these for my browser, (Internet Explorer 7 based). However, when I open the browser window, it will not crash, (just give me the "windll32" error message, and I can then proceed to play the files in Windows Media Player, or any other media-player on my system. Can someone please advise me on how to stop my browser crashing when I open the folders, or try to edit/upload the files, and if I do need Codecs, can you please be sure to only link to ones released by reputable sources, preferably Microsoft only. Please also note that I'm not looking to convert the file into other formats, alternate browsers, alternate media players or registry editors; all I'm looking for is an official solution to this problem, which I've been advised is codec related, so that I can open them in the browser without crashing, as well as in Windows Movie Maker without it crashing the WMM too, (as mentioned, I can play them no problem in Windows Movie Player once I close the "windll32" error messages). Good theory Kish, though it happens direct from the camcorder HDD, from my PC HDD, from memory sticks.... As for having too many, I have 2 in the folder....kinda thought Vista 32bit HOme Premium was a little more advanced than Windows 3.1 lol. Dude, your response is intriguing, is it official, and does it remove existing codecs, as many of these packages do that, and I'd like to keep what I got so everything else works just fine. Here is a screendump of the error in question: http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a137/ScottBull/?action=view¤t=MPEG2ErrorMessages.jpg As mentioned, I'm not looking for alternate browsers, and FireFox is something used by noobs who believe the rubbish they read on FireFox hosted websites, (no offence), either way, the browser would not alter how Windows detects and operates files. Gotta' admit though, Veoh is something pretty sweet huh CAE, I love the ability to upload files of any size. Thanks Ment, but I'm not looking to convert them, (and I can't do this anyhow, as the browser will crash), the camcorder it's taken from has HD as standard anyhow, I merely recorded in SD for convenience....or so I thought.
internet explorer ???????? why does everyone choose firefox browsers google chrome etc over internet explorer.... i mean internet explorer is made by microsoft..microsoft is windows.... surely we should have some faith in them! and surely the browser isnt as bad as people say (security)....and why is open source so much better than prop software?? whats wrong with keeping there code private??
why cant i open a link i click on in an email? I got an email from a highly trusted source and it contained a link that i cant open when i click on it. Is Jeff Paul Internet Million Is true compare with these two stories? Can your tell me which one is true? The actual website his website Jeff Paul Scam Jeff Paul 's magic system is not a scam . Jeff Paul 's money making system cannot be a scam . These days at late night when your favorite soap goes on for commercials suddenly you see two women talking about Jeff Paul 's great magic system that guarantees you of earning thousands of dollars everyday. To an average person it seems tempting but at the end it will still be called a scam . Of course you would think like that but actually people have misunderstood the whole idea and concept of Jeff Paul 's system. It seems that people are not applying his system according to what Jeff Paul has explained maybe because the greed of earning good cash, and later when the system does not give the actual output or very eager to get early results, the term ‘ scam ' does not take long to come into the picture. As you may have heard from various anonymous sources that Jeff Paul in was a Direct Marketer in the early 90s, and his earning was not satisfying him and his family from hand to mouth. He did have computer knowledge at that time. He then later on formulated an excellent technique of internet marketing which earned him millions. It won't be a scam because Jeff Paul used his strategy and his months of internet marketing labor that got him reach on top. Today, Jeff Paul is a self-proclaimed internet marketing guru teaching and revealing his secret of success to all men and women including young IT students with a purpose of helping the IT community to also reach to a level where he is, and not with a purpose of scam . It is a strong fact that there are no shortcuts to reach to the highest point without hard work. Jeff Paul 's system also requires hard work and dedication to achieve the desired results. The system does not trick or scam but teaches the right strategies and steps to achieve that highest point. Even when Jeff Paul's discovery was tested and implemented by his close friends, it took about 4-5 months to get that valuable profit with using the simple steps used by Jeff Paul and mentioned in his systems. None of his closest friends felt like a scam or a trick because Jeff Paul was personally helping them use his systems. The reason for this accusation of Jeff Paul 's system being a scam could be a strategy of other competitors trying to degrade Jeff Paul's system to promote their products; it could also be a jealous scheme of Jeff Paul's rival of spreading the word of his product being a total scam . But the other cause of Jeff Paul's system being blacklisted is people are being misled and people not using his system according to the instructions. Scam News If you watch late night TV you have most likely came across Jeff Paul Internet Millions Shortcuts infomercial. In fact, you either got very excited about it and decided to continue your research about the program on the internet... or you got very sceptical about the far fetched promises and once again, opened up an internet browser to research about Jeff's shortcuts. If one would think about it logically he would see a little problem with this system. Imagine you stumble upon an easy way of making millions on the internet with only "3 simple clicks", as Jeff's shortcut to millions system claims, would you sell it to the whole North America for only $40? Probably not... The truth is, making money online is possible. In fact, many people have made and keep on making fortunes online but these people know that "3 simple clicks" just isn't enough. You too can become successful and wealthy but only after you learn about Internet Marketing and apply the knowledge properly. Jeff Paul Internet Millions Shortcuts system does not cost $40. This is the fee for a "start-up package" which doesn't really tell you much... except the same old outrageous claims of how easy it is to make one million bucks in a week without knowing or doing anything, if it was this easy, don't you think everyone would be doing it by now? Let's continue. Once you receive the start-up kit, your phone will start ringing and the telemarketers who say they work for Jeff Paul will try to up-sell you expensive packages for $5,000, $10,000 and so on, they claim you need these packages if you are serious about making money online. To be honest, there is no magic system to making millions on the internet. There are great coaching programs and online communities that will teach you about marketing online and these programs cost as little as one buck per day without any up-sells and other marketing tricks intended to rip you off, such programs also do not claim how much money you will make and how easy it is, because it will take time and effort from your side. You can start a successful business online with very little to none budget at all, however, you will only succeed if you are wiling to learn and put in some effort. So if you are determined to succeed, You probably will as long as you get the ri The first thing that should catch your eye is the title of Jeff Pauls Course, "Short Cut To Millions". The thought of making a million, quick and easy gets people giddy with excitement. But, deep down everyone knows that odds are it will not happen. Jeff Paul is a great marketer, in his infomercial he combines two of mans primal desire's, beautiful women and tons of easy money. For all the intelligent women out there, he gets you too. You figure, if these two women can do it, I certainly can. At 2 in the morning, it's pretty easy to get suckered into buying his internet opportunity. The Cost The initial fee for Jeff Paul's Short Cut To Millions is $39.95 plus about $14 shipping and handeling. Then your credit card is billed each month for an additional $39.95 and in return get 10 "new internet businesses". The ten "3 clicks to cash" websites you get every month from Jeff Paul are the same website
Clearing Browser (IE7) Cache not working? Hi, I am using an open source content management system and I am having a problem that is unique to Internet Explorer (v7). Specifically, when I update the content of my site and save my changes, although the website accurately reflects my changes, when I go back to view the content item in the administrator portion of my site, the changes are not reflected. Only when I go to Tools -> Internet Options --> Browsing -> Delete Temporary Internet Files will the latest changes appear. The browser seems to be caching old values every time I make a change to the content of my site. My settings are such that the browser is configured to look for a new version of the site on each visit to the webpage. I have confirmed that this is not an issue with Firefox, just Internet Explorer. Any ideas? I have tried the "Delete All" option under browsing in IE7 and this works ONLY for the current session. When I make changes to my content again and save the changes, I reload the page and it is cached with the old value. So, I need a more viable solution than this.
Software for Web based Live Internet Radio? I was wondering if there are such software that can broadcast live radio through the internet and SHOULD BE PLAYABLE through any web browser using any popular plug ins such as flash or java. I was after shoutcast but i found out that it required winamp for listener to access my radio station. I want it to be on the browser only. I've tried Live365 but its kinda hard for me coz Im living outside USA and there must be an agreement with them first before I can subscribe. Im using this for a FM radio station in our city. Any open source or free software is preffered though Im willing to pay any reasonable amount if it is needed.
I downloaded a Free Youtube Video Downlader.....? But I cant seem to get the videos to play because it tells me that it can't open the file and then tells me to select a source where it came from. Local ASP Files Not opening in Internet Explorer anymore. Help!? Hi I was able to view ASP files in my PC without IIS installed in IE Browser 6.0 on Win XP. In my Source Editor (NoteTab Light), there is View in browser Option. Recently I installed Antivirus and oops! When I try to View ASP files in Browser, it opens IE but on IE we see only the source code. Its not rendering Html Page. HTML files, its able to render. I understand that some registry entries would have got deleted realted to IE. Can anyone help? Hi Smutty... Please note that I am using NotetabLight as editor. (http://www.notetab.com/ntl.php) It has view in browser button. The current ASP page will be rendered in IE. Offcourse database functionalities would not work. You can see HTML content as you would see if u used IIS or on a webpage. Rightnow I am using "Notetab light" in my Laptop and I have no issues in editing HTML content in ASP files and viewing them. BUT on my desktop this stopped working, after I downloaded and installed Macfee. I think some registry entries which helps IE to render files with scripting is removed by Antivirus. Unble to get help from anywhere. I use NoteTab light to edit pages and add content to my website. I am not a coder hence have not installed IIS.

How do you remove the Fast Browser Search tab? This is not like the other FastBrowserSearch questions being asked in Yahoo Answers. Mine is different. Before you answer, I have Internet Explorer 7 and running Windows Vista 64 bit. Here goes my story: My computer installed a piece of "software" a couple weeks ago. Without knowing, "Fast Browser Search" was my default tab welcome screen. I quickly removed Fast Browser Search from my computer using "Uninstall or Remove Programs". I removed it, and the toolbar is uninstalled too. Everything I could find on my computer that has "Fast Browser Search" was deleted by me. I restarted computer and Internet Explorer. Then, the Fast Browser Search came back on the tab. I tried everything offered in online searches. Still, the source of the Fast Browser Search was not found on my computer! Its like removing something that is not there! All "Fast Browser Search" files and programs have been removed and I already did a full Malware Scan using Malware Bytes AntoMalware. At the end, it keeps coming back, haunting me everytime I open a new tab. Please help! Again, it is the TABS I need to change, not the toolbar.

when i click a link in an e-mail, how can i get CHROME to open, not IE? as above really... i've already made google chrome my default browser, but sometimes i get links sent to me, from e-bay or other sources, and when i click on the link it automatically opens internet explorer not chrome.. help me stop this microsoft madness and be complete in google-y godness.. just to clarify -in chrome under options it tells me chrome is ALREADY set to the default browser, and i NEED IE unfortunately as i use a microsoft service that's not yet compatible with chrome so i can't uninstall it. another example is this... i got an e-mail saying that i had an answer to THIS question , i clicked the link to see what the answer was, and internet explorer opened! READ THE QUESTION PEOPLE! I've ALREADY made chrome the default browser, the button is blanked out in options and it says google chrome is the default browser, AND i've checked under internet explorer options and it plainly tells me that internet explorer is NOT the default browser, but STILL IE opens when i click a link from an e-mail. and yes, i've been running chrome for weeks, and it works perfectly. Thanks dodgersmustangs but when i did what you said it already says that internet explorer is NOT the default search engine. yet STILL, when i get an email from yahoo answers saying that i have a new answer and follow the link to SEE that answer, it opens IE, not chrome.. HELP!
Using LAN on Warcraft3:TFT? I want to LAN with my brother on Warcraft3. We share the same router and we're in the same house, but for some reason I can't see the games he makes on LAN and vice versa. Does anyone know the problem? When researching, several sources suggest that we turn off firewall. If not opening an internet browser, would it still be dangerous and vulnerable to worms when firewall is disabled? Thanks a lot! Would it be a good idea to disable firewall but leave Norton Anti-virus on?
If I switch from AOL to Yahoo, will I get an icon on my desktop that allows me to get online to Yahoo? I have a Yahoo Personals account. BUT I am also a (very) long time AOL member. I am becoming disappointed in the AOL service, and would like another source of Internet access. I have a number of questions: 1) In order to get online with Yahoo, do I need to open (pay for) an account other than my Yahoo Personals? 2) If I open a regular (online, e-mail, etc.) Yahoo account, and later decide to cancel my Yahoo Personals account, how will that affect my regular Yahoo Internet access account? 3) If I open a regular Yahoo e-mail, online access account - will I have a 'Yahoo Icon' on my desktop as I do now wil AOL, that will allow me to gain access to the Internet? 4) If I (need to) open another regular Yahoo account for e-mail, and online access - how will that affect my 'Internet Explorer' browser? I am really not familiar with getting online services with any other source than AOL, so any explanation of how to switch to a regular Yahoo accoun

how do I change a file to open in Windows Explorer rather than FireFox? I got an e-mail from a trusted source (www.atlus.com - a game producing company) that had one of those e-cards in it for valentines day. I went to save it and when I clicked the link it asked what I wished to associate the files to. I saw Windows Explorer but looked quickly and thought it said Internet Explorer, so I changed it to open with Firefox and set it to "always perform this option". Now whenever I open anything like that file type (that I don't even know what the extension is) it starts spamming new tabs for blank untitled pages into my FF browser. My laptop is new and is running Vista. I bought it a couple weeks ago and am still trying to figure out how to maneuver around Vista. I set most of it up like XP via Classic settings and views. I tried looking in the Set Associations option list, but don't see anything associated wrongly. I've been looking at it for 2 hours now and am at my wit's end. (That'll teach me to associate file types while sick. -.-! )
Internet will not work on my computer but my cable modem is fine? I bought a graphics card for my eMachines computer (Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT) and after I installed it, my internet stopped working suddenly (I'm at the library right now). I unplugged it to see if that was the problem, but it was still acting the same. I have an Adelphia (Time Warner) surfboard modem, checked the modem and it was fine, lights all on and everything. I even hooked it up to my Xbox 360 to see if it was something with the modem, and I was able to get on Live just fine. Which leads me to believe that the problem is something with the computer. I went into "Phone and Modem Options" in the Control Panel, and saw that the current modem was "PCI Soft data fax modem with SmartCP". In the "Attached To" column, it said Not Attached. But I am not sure if it was like this before because I never needed to check. Every time I open up Firefox, every page I attempt to enter says "Page Load Error". Pretty much the same thing with IE and every other browser I use. I turned the firewall on and off just to make sure, and nothing happened. Usually, when I disconnect the internet cord between my modem and computer, I see an icon in the bottom right panel of the screen with a bubble that pops up saying something to the likes of "Internet disconnected" (can't remember clearly). When I disconnected it after it stopped working, I never saw that. Lastly, I went to "Network Connections", I think it is, in the control panel to see what connections might be there. There was nothing in there at all. It just feels like something doesn't detect my modem and it's leaving me confused because I can't find the source of the problem. What might be the problem and how can I get my internet back to normal?

How do you change NAT to OPEN for 2 XBOX 360s connected to the same router? Router = Linksys Model = WRT54G v. 3 Me and my brother both have an XBOX 360, and we can both connect to XBOX LIVE at the same time and play in the same games, so that isn't a problem. The problem is that one XBOX 360 will have an NAT set at OPEN, while the other will be set at either MODERATE or STRICT (it changes occasionally). I have been looking around on the Internet, and have found some people that know what they are talking about, but I just don't fully understand how to do what they are instructing. If you are going to give me advice, please put it in simple terms. I do know how to configure most things in my router, so you may not have to put in the simplest forms. Also, please take a look at this post on this forum before you post. Some guy knows what he is talking about, and I would appreciate it if someone could direct me on how to do what he is saying. The link to the post is: http://www.ipcops.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7260 The guy's name is "up4fun" and he says this: "Yes, the solution is to have multiple external IP addresses, with an alias for each one, then setup 1:1 NAT so thet each xbox has it's own external representation. Then you don't need uPnP. So, armed with 2 spare IP addresses (x.y.z.1 and x.y.z.2), you would Setup aliases using the web interface )(if you are using pppoe, this is hidden from the menus, so point your browser at https://ipcop:445/cgi-bin/aliases.cgi Setup forwards to those interfaces (to 10.1.1.10 and 10,1,1,20, for instance) setup 1:1 NAT for those interfaces by adding a line for each xbox to /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.local as shown below. Code: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A CUSTOMPOSTROUTING -o ppp0 -s 10.1.1.10 -j SNAT --to-source x.y.z.1 /sbin/iptables -t nat -A CUSTOMPOSTROUTING -o ppp0 -s 10.1.1.20 -j SNAT --to-source x.y.z.2 Put these rules in the startup AND reload sections of rc.firewall.local, and remember to change ppp0 to the correct RED device name (eth0,eth1,eth2, etc) if you have a router between the ipcop and your ADSL." -If you know what he is talking about, and can help me understand how to do this, then please, by all means, help me out!!! Thank you for your time.

What is cpanel, and why does it not let me get to the site I am trying to get to? I am trying to get to a site known as nexon.net. This page about cpanel appears and this is what it says: Great Success ! Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server If you can see this page, then the people who manage this server have installed cPanel and WebHost Manager (WHM) which use the Apache Web server software and the Apache Interface to OpenSSL (mod_ssl) successfully. They now have to add content to this directory and replace this placeholder page, or else point the server at their real content. ATTENTION! If you are seeing this page instead of the site you expected, please contact the administrator of the site involved. (Try sending an email to <webmaster@domain>.) Linksys problem with WRT54G router? So I have a Linksys WRT54G V8 router. And it wasn't putting out the signal strength I wanted, so I attempted to install the DD-WRT open source firmware that does many things to make a router more powerful and useful. However, upon installation of this firmware, I was not able to access the internet, or even the router setup through the default gateway in my browser. I want to restore factory defaults on the router, but since I cannot get to the router setup and settings, this cannot be achieved. Does anyone know how I can restore factory defaults on the router, or have any suggestions of any sort?

My internet browsing has been extremely glitchy and slow lately? My dad was using this computer for a while and installed bunches of programs etc. With any browser, sometimes when I go to a web page it would either give an error message or show huge lines of source code instead. I would then have to refresh over and over until it worked 5-10 times later. Logging into websites is even worse, as I would have to retyped my username and password over and over. Could this be related to me setting a static IP for this computer? I did it to open the NAT for my Xbox 360, and I'm pretty sure I did it right. Thanks in advance. I also forgot to mention, some of my usual applications like vuze and limewire no longer work either.
Was it Live Messenger that gave me a virus? How do I get rid? HELP!? Recently, Internet Explorer has been launching itself and opening adverts. Internet explorer is not my main browser.. Also, today, it has been opening pages with snippets of websites I've visited on my main browser!! Even some of my yahoo answers questions!! It's quite scary, maybe someone is reading what I write?? AVG detected a virus called "Trojan horse Generic10.YLG" which is apparantly situated in the folder: C:\Program Files\Circle Development\Uninstall.exe Recently, I downloaded the new add-on for Messenger called Messenger Plus, which contains a lot of new features. The virus was detected shortly after this, along with explorer windows opening, so I was sucpicious it could be from this program. After performing a google search on the words "Circle Development" and "Uninstall" One of the top matches was a page about Messenger Plus, which may conclude the source of the virus.... Am I right? What should I do?? Are my computer and personal files in danger? I took your advice Muckdoomee and deleted the program. When I was on the uninstallation page, it said that it cannot uninstall the addon addware because it was not installed correctly. It also said that if I wanted to uninstall it, I would have to re-install messenger plus, which to me, sounds like a scam. I uninstalled the program anyway, but CiD popups are still occuring. I will try the website you reccommended. Yeah, it said Messenger plus and sponsor in the add/remove section :S As in one of the programs was "Messenger Plus and Sponsor" together Latest is, the CiDs are still here and that website is only for Me and XP but I have vista

Software Developers POV: What is better? Piracy or using the free competitor's product...? I got thinking about this hypothetical situation after I had a problem opening a document from a classmate. I use Office 2003 and I have absolutely no interest in 'upgrading' to office 2007. My reasons are: 1 - it costs money. 2 - it offers no additional features or services that have any interest whatsoever to me. 3 - it is a waste of extra space and system resources. So there I am with a .docX file from office 2007... Funny thing, my PDA can open it without trouble in Textmaker, but I can't do a damned thing with it on my computer without installing a compatibility pack from Microsoft. Of course Microsoft's website won't actually let you download that pack... the download page is broken, simply sending you to its internal search engine from the download page... Now my solution is simple and I have already taken care of things (my PDA can open it and save as an Office 2003 in about 20 seconds - LUV WIFI) BUT, I was thinking about what I would do without it... Clearly MS would love for me to give them $$$ to upgrade to office 2007, but I would rather get testicular cancer than give $$$ for software I actively dislike. So that leaves two Schroedinger's cat type options - grab a pirated 2007 or go open source... So now I started thinking from the Point of View of Microsoft. if I were a software developer, if people are not willing to pay me for my software, what would I prefer? Would I prefer that they pirate my software and use it that way or would I prefer that they use a free open source alternative? What about you? I can see two sides: If they are using the pirated version, they will develop a familiarity and preference for your software. Perhaps later, they will decide that it actually is worth upgrading (confession - I have done this with both Photoshop and Vegas pro... $1600 dollars of income for Sony and Adobe resulting from 2 years of piracy that would never have happened if I had not been able to develop loyalty, familiarity and skill with those programs... I currently also teach those programs in university clubs and recommend them strongly - further potential and realized income for those companies) On the other hand, If they use the Open source free version, this income will never be generated. The loss to the original companies will always be 'perceived' since there was never any chance that they would get any money for the same services offered by the software. Loyalty, familiarity and skill will be built up with the other program. Later, if that program decides to solicit cash (shareware type donations or by expanding to an 'elite' pay version), they are likely to get paying customers from the market segment of those who were not originally willing to pay YOU the software developer whose software the open source variant is copying.... What is even more curious about this is that users who choose this avenue of alternatives are generally more interested in using legitimate programs, hence when they do decide to put money into that type of software, they are more likely to pay than simply move to 'the next version' via a torrent or download. I feel this is an interesting and possibly important question as it becomes easier and easier to get highly functional, virus free pirated software and illicit internet use becomes more and more accepted by the general populace (note the new features in the big 3 browsers with 'incognito' modes, presumably a nod towards porn and pirating websites). Please note: This is not a question regarding piracy or recommending piracy. I am not asking for the POV of the consumer. It is asking the opinion of people who make and write (and market) software. This is not an ethics question. to the last two "answers"... I'm not looking at this from the point of view of a consumer, it was a consumer issue that got me thinking about how this issue might be viewed by SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS. IE: the other side of the fence. In my case, the download page on MS's site is or was broken for whatever reason and did not lead to a viable download, it was an endless circle. I can easily go to get the compatibility pack elsewhere too, but the point is that this lapse in service from MS when I was dealing with a time-sensitive document from across the other side of the world did not merit mucking about. Further, this 2007 compatibility pack _should_ have been updated automatically with windows updates but again, for some reason it was not. This is a lapse of service on MS's part and I cynically wondered if there might be a shadowy reason behind it. I'm a photographer and I will occasionally give stuff away free if I feel it may lead to business later...
This is a bit advanced...Tcp/Ip - Winsock problem? Pc with a ADSL connection through ADSL Modem. It connects to the internet, it gets an ip and all (checked with ipconfig). From command i can ping my gateway to the internet as well as the DNS i am provided with. When i try to ping google or anything else, it reports it couldnt find the host. Same with web browser also (either Firefox or Explorer). If i do a repair in the TCP/IP stack and Winsock and reboot everything works fine for a while. I can ping anything from command, i can access with browser anything. After a while connection gets lost again. When i lose connection an entry is logged in widows event viewer with the following details: Event id: 4307 (Initialization failed because the transport refused to open initial Addresses) Source: NetBt I have scanned with up to date Panda Antivirus and Spybot S&D, also did all microsoft updates (System Win Xp Pro) Any ideas? Format not an option....
Anyone know why my Steam Account wont connect to servers? So as of 2 weeks ago, my Steam Account will not connect to servers. I tried to play Counterstrike Source and connecting to a favorite server I have in my Steam Server Browser, it opens up and says "Connecting to server" with 2 bars..about a minute later it says it failed after 4 retries. When in the game, I cannot see servers in the internet database, favorites or history. It does this for other games as well. Here's the catch: My boyfriend has his own account and his account works perfectly fine and he can play games on this computer, but my account will not connect to servers for any games. I have tried everything and even contacted Steam Support, nothing they suggest has fixed the issue and also everything they've suggested I have already tried. I've already tried port forwarding, deleting clientregistry.blob, re-downloading CSS on my account, renaming steamapps as to reload it, deleting my folder, copying over my boyfriend's folders/cstrike folder..and then some. Nothing works. So why can my boyfriend's account work on this computer, but mine does not? It's really frustrating. My account works on other computers, just not this one. So I dont need a new account.

Why can't I update my anti-virus? Aright, this will be a little long, so bear with me, here: My computer just recovered from a very bad virus attack that shook it to the core. Some of the problems were: 1. Free virus scan (i.e. "Your computer may be infected blah-dee-blah) message whenever I opened folders. 2.Incredibly slow browser, even when my interned speed was 54.0 Mbps Anyways, I ran anti virus, restarted my computer a few times, and the messages are gone, my internet is fine... There is still one problem. I was told it is a good idea to have more than one virus scanner, because usually one can not get and kill every virus, so I now have Avast and AVG, however, I can not update either of them. If I cant update them, and the virus database has grown, they might not even recognize the virus... I tried to go onto the website, but both give me the message that I cant connect to the website, or any other anti virus website, which I find to be rather indicative of malware/Trojan/virus/etc. Is there any way that I can update Avast and AVG via another source, or will I have to wipe it all and reinstall Windows? Any other suggestions?
CiD Ads and Possible LOP Trojans HELP! (contains HJT Log)? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, i have norton internet security and i need to get rid of CiD pop-up ads that started appearing after i downloaded "MSN Messenger Plus"! *mumble* to heck with you, msn *mumble* Anyway i got superAntiSpyware but it didnt detect anything. I went to "add/remove programs" and have removed everything to do with windows live and CiD (couldnt find "CiD Help) including "windows live messenger (original) and "Windows live home" and selected to "delete sponsor" but they still came (with slightly less intensity). Yes, i found "MSN PLUS! Sponsor Program" and deleted it but the ads keep comming. I searched my computer for any windows live plus remaining. none. I even did a restore computer thing were i went one day before the download. didnt work. I have running now: comcast desktop doctor, google pop-up blocker, internet explorer pop-up blocker, and Norton security. I coud use "SUPER anti Spyware" if needed, but it brings my computer to a crawl and it already couldnt fin the problem when i did full computer scan, and while it didnt boot right after download, the CiD ads kept on popping-up and popping-down. Mine looked brand spanking new. Very fast, the battery does last only 1 1/2 hours, but I got an extra battery for $65 on eBay used and it works nicely. Came with Vista, but I put WinXP on mine and found all the drivers on the internet. The construction is very sturdy hard plastic, none of the cheap flimsy stuff. Overall the value is great, it feels and looks more durable than laptops of the past, and is fast. Great buy. REVIEW BY: Rick M. Reviewed Aug 07, 2008 I bought this laptop a week ago.and received it Wednesday. Excellent condition, I would have thougt I just picked it up at a store. My only problem was when I allowed Norton Internet Security to load (60 day trial)and then brought up the internet, half way through loading, the system locked up. The only way to free it up was to manualy power down. I unistalled Norton and installed AVG Free. NO more problems !!!! This is a very fast easy to use laptop with all the bells and whistles. Also very fast shipping,3 days. VERY HAPPY REVIEW BY: fraqtured Reviewed Aug 06, 2008 i bought the T1625 which is essentially the same specs as this, and wanted to input the impression i drew from the t1625. first off, great price, amazing features, and with a laptop cooler running $40 dollars for a middle of the road model, this laptop will run cool [the only complaint i have found on these was the heat] and you will have picked yourself up a top with features running in some cases nearly twice as much in price of a non refurbs, which will only be the refurbs of tomorrow. run all the updates through gateway, and do a clean reinstall and pertition reformat when you unpack, it, it will take a little bit of time, but will point you in a much faster direction. this laptop is highly recomended in my opinion. REVIEW BY: Reviewed Aug 05, 2008 This is my first purchase from TD.com, and I'm very satisfied with it. The Turion 64 dualcore processor and the 2GB of RAM make short work of everything I throw at it; I have Pidgin (my IM client), Firefox (with 3 tabs open, including YouTube), LimeWire, and uTorrent all running at the same time and there is absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. My only gripes are that it gets a little bit hot when charging, and the battery only lasts for an hour and a half; I can deal with heat and the battery can be easily upgraded. The only thing you have to worry about with refurbished products is the look, not performance; Mine came with a small scratch in the top of the case, but performs like a champ. If you don't mind some minor cosmetic flaws, I'd definitely recommend this computer to anyone on a budget, especially at this price! Your computer uses memory to run your Operating System, applications, peripherals, and to generate and display graphics on your computer monitor. Video memory is a form of RAM, and is either built into your motherboard; or on a graphics card (video card). Depending on the motherboard's configuration, and that of the video card (if separate or built-in to the motherboard), your computer may have to draw on its own RAM memory to meet its video memory needs. This creates shared memory, where your computer’s RAM will be shared between its own Processor (CPU) and its graphics chip. The result is that some systems will have shared memory, some will not. If you have 2GB (for example) of system memory installed, you may notice that your system reports significantly less memory. This is because your system is using shared memory for your video. What can you do about this? You can actually configure this shared memory through your computer’s BIOS settings. However, this is a setting best left alone, since it is typically optimized for display performance, and making changes may impact display resolutions, and other video capabilities. The simplest solution is usually to either: increase your system memory; or to upgrade the video hardware. By upgrading to a new video card with built-in video memory, then turning off shared memory, you will free your system to use it's maximum potential memory, and provide your system with much more robust video features. Click Here for our Memory Options » Click Here for the latest Video Cards » How Much Memory Do You Really Have? When you look at the specifications for a computer, it will display the installed memory, and typically the maximum memory that can be installed. However, while these are real values, they represent a potential useable memory. The actual useable memory may be different from these values. The reason is simply that a computer may configured to use shared memory, which reduces the amount of RAM that is available to the CPU by using some of it for other purposes, such as for video memory. In some cases, you can control the maximum useable memory through system settings, and by upgrading to a video card that has internal onboard video memory. But always remember, that the amount of memory that your system reports, is not always the amount of actual installed memory. If you find that you need more memory, we suggest expanding your system memory, since this is the most effective performance increase, and the one that is easiest to perform . Click Here for our Memory Options » Click Here for the latest Video Cards » · Memory - Useable Memory How Much Memory Do You Really Have? If you find that you need more memory, we suggest expanding your system memory, since this is the most effective performance increase, and the one that is easiest to perform . why spyware is getting past 3 different scanners (they see it but cant delete it)? i have a dual boot comp so this is how im posting. i recently put vista on my comp (bout 3 weeks ago) and over the last week the internet has been painfully slow (but fine on xp) and in google when i search, down the bottom where it says waiting for Http://www.google.com/search............................... and so on then an ip address, for some reason now it says waiting for Http://www.copy-book.com then waiting for google.com. the results look fine but when i click one result it open a new tab says about:blank then redirects to heaps of different sites including www.copy-book, click.smartbizsearch.com and many others, after googling on xp for a while it appears that its spyware, since then i downloaded heaps of different trusted spyware and virus killers. when using them they all Say 3 counts found: zlob dns changer and 2 trojan horses. spyware search and destroy or spy bot whatever its called was able to remove them all others couldn't suddenly everything was back to normal but 2 days later it happened again and now nothing gets rid of them (the same viruses and spyware believe it or not) and i feel like a Calculator is more powerful than this thing right now can someone please help i am at the point of desperation here One More Note: when right clicking the main google page on vista and xp and going view source the two supposedly same google pages are different in source when pressing ctrl+F and typing in copybook it comes up 4 times in vista none in xp. One Other Note: yes i have tried deleting and blocking cookies and blocking copy book, oh and when i type copybooks url in the address bar it doesnt work, when i google anything close to how to fix spyware or "in google copy book always comes up" it just reverts to my last search or closes the browser, and even blocks updates to my scanners like avg free, i have tried everything i can think of. any help appreciated
How do I make a custom, but basic, slot machine with html (or java, css, etc)? I am trying to figure out how I would make a little web coded slot machine and get it to work in the way that when you get the results after each pull of the 'lever', it opens a random [ and doesn't have to coincide with the results] page from a number of various specific pages in a separate embedded window/frame inside the main browser window. I am not exactly too advanced in html, css, java and etc, but since learning html basics a long time ago, I've learned a lot through tutorials, practice and basically through teaching myself, so I think that in time I will get the hang of this [at least it sounds like it would be difficult]. I know there is a way I can do it, but I don't know how to trigger the other page to load as soon as the images in the slots stop moving, not when the 'lever' is pulled/clicked on. Plus it would require a lot more work. I've searched on google and the only one I found didn't seem to work --> http://javascript.internet.com/games/slot-machine.html When I tried it, all I saw was this on a blank page; "Free JavaScripts provided by The JavaScript Source" Does anyone have the exact coding for something like this or know of where I can get it? [FOR FREE :( ] Will I need Flash or something for part of it?
