How to participate in Open Source Project? How to participate in Open Source Project? would like to participate in open source community. I want to develop open source project or want to participate in open source project that already existing. I saw in code.google.com but how to join a existing a project?
What's the most effective way to attract a critical mass for an open source, social software coding project? I'm in Austin, looking to start an open source project to build a Context Management System. Web 1.0 was the age of content, and hence the Content Management Systems (Vignette, et al). Web 2.0 is the age of context. Learning to manage context, and letting go of content, is a whole new ball of wax. The purpose of the project is to allow ad-hoc formation of peer groups for small and large scale projects. In a real sense, this is a boot-strapping project. If such a thing existed, I'd be using it right now to create this project -- but of course, this project would then be unnecessary, and I would be able to focus my attention on other issues of interest, like: adult developmental stages, emergence, cultural transformation, etc. People in Silicon Valley just advertise that they are having a coding party. People in Central Texas barely grok del.icio.us. How can we best close the gap?
Building my PHP+Mysql project from other open source projects? I want to build a digg like site, but only using HTML. I want to build it out of code that i create and code from other PHP projects. I am confident that it can be done using code from PHP blogs as it is similar in functionality. Where can i find PHP open source projects that will help me build my website? Thanks.
How start programming in an open source project? I have a bachelor's in Computer Science but have not used my programming knowledge/experience in the last couple of years. I want to re-sharpen my skills and think participating in some open source projects would help and be very interesting; but I really don't know where to start. -- do I just find a project I want to help with? (where do I find one) -- is there a community for each project that I need to present myself to? -- if there is a project I'd like to help with, where do I begin? -- where can I help smaller projects and warm up? I hope you get the gist of this question, any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks, -Nico
How do I start an open source GUI design project? I want to initiate an open-source style project to design an advanced (animated) GUI for a new application. No initial commercial ambitions...just an ambition/curiosity of mine. I would like to start with artists / graphic designers instead of coders because I really want to 'think outside the box' on the interface. (i.e. probably initially break all known GUI / windowing rules most coders know and love). Most sites (like Sourceforge) seem oriented to coders rather than designers. I am not a designer myself, so I do not know where they hang out and where I could recruit some to the project. A sourceforge for designers would be ideal, but I have a feeling it does not exist. Any ideas on sites where I could start would be appreciated! I have beginner - intermediate knowledge on the open source concept itself, so anywhere I could do some more self-education on that would be great too. Thanks in advance!
How to work in open source project ????? Hi friends !!!! I am an engineering student of the most reputed college of my country . I want to work on some open source project (preferably in some OCR software ) . Can anybody tell me how to approach them ???????
What is a good open source project management solution? I'm an employee at a large Enterprise and have been appointed the responsibility of designing a system that keeps tracks of trials. A trial is essentially a scientific experiment consisting of several phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Ideally, I'm looking for a platform that provides a great level of interactivity.
How to start an open source software project? I have a software idea. In talking with some people, I feel that there will be a lot of interest in this software. I want to use the open source community to create this software. I know that I can host the project on www.sourceforge.net, but how do I get developers to work on it? How do I manage the process, releases, QA etc? I only have an idea and no hands on software development experience. How will this process work? If you can share your experience, it will be great.
Looking for good open source, web-based project management system? I am looking for a good open source project management software. key is that they system is web-based, can by run behind a firewall. Does not need to be particularly powerful (e.g., resource leveling is optional), but would like something that is proven, popular, and has an active developer base (so that bugs get fixed, etc.) I have looked at Dotproject (http://www.dotproject.net/) and Double Choco Latte (http://dcl.sourceforge.net/). Any experience with those systems?

What are open source projects that i should join and how? I am a 16 year old that is trying to make a name for myself through open source. Obviously, this won't happen overnight. Open source project management? Can anyone tell if there are differences or special approaches in open source project management. For example is there any special way to do estimation or risk estimation.
Open Source Project? Hi, I would like to start an open source project, however, I have never done one before. I am very capable of making the program and graphics, but it more the organization of it that is bugging me. Stuff like what features for what version, where to store files, and basically just project management. Do you have any tools or advice?
open source help desk / project management software needed? Our group has a few guys who cooperate to get a job done. We need a simple (hopefully open source) piece of software where people can submit tickets, sign off when their part is done, and finally close out the project. Nothing too elaborate or complicated. Create a job, each person ticks off his component, then the last person closes it. This way everyone can see what work is pending. Ideally this would be a php-based package we could load on our linux server and then modify a bit if desired. Any suggestions for us?
Have you all seen this Open Source Swift Kick to the Balls Project (OSSKBP) posted by Misia over a year ago? just read this and it is very funny. It was in response to that lame open source boob squeezing nerdfest proposal. A gal named Misia posted this on live journal on 4/22/08. Enjoy. "A Modest Proposal As we all know, many women long to give a swift kick in the balls to some male person or other. Yet all too often women are prohibited from doing so. Sometimes this is due to our culture's repressive attitudes toward female violence or because of societal pressure for women to behave in "ladylike" and feminine ways. At times women must censor themselves from administering a good solid boot to the greater masculine crotch due to historically justified fear of reprisal. At yet other times it is nothing more or less than men's self-serving, self-glorifying attitudes toward their precious little patriarchal testicles that lead them to cravenly avoid supporting women's emotional and political expression. All in all, we live in a culture that routinely prohibits women this useful and healthy outlet for the outrage that almost every women eventually feels as a result of living in a sexist patriarchal society. Indeed, we live in a culture which punishes women for even thinking or talking about expressing their rage in this way. This must change, and men, who after all have an obligation to help redress thousands of years of unearned patriarchal privilege, also have a moral obligation to help solve this problem. To this end, we propose a community-based Open Source Swift Kick to the Balls Project. Like other Open Source projects, the Open Source Swift Kick to the Balls Project (OSSKBP) relies on a wide pool of volunteers working together for the common good. The Project has very simple parameters and it basically works like this: Men who are open to being given a swift kick in the balls need do nothing. Women will simply assume that any man not clearly indicating his position vis-a-vis being kicked in the balls with an approved OSSKBP badge or pin is open to being kicked in the balls, as any progressive, free-thinking, feminist man ought to be, by any woman who wishes to do so. However, we also recognize and affirm that not all men will be so willing to serve. Therefore the OSSKBP provides two other options. 1. Men who would like to be asked for permission before a woman administers one or more swift kicks to their balls shall wear the offical OSSKBP "Ask First Pin" at all times. This is a black lapel pin with a lavender question mark on it. Because of the serious and comprehensive respect with which women's desires vis-a-vis having their bodies touched by others are uniformly greeted in our culture, women will sometimes abide by any given Ask First Pin wearer's stated preference about getting a kick in the balls at the time that he is asked. At other times, however, women may make their own decisions as to whether or not to give him a quick kick in the nuts regardless of the male's expressed preference. Fair's fair. 2. Men who do not wish to be kicked in the balls at all must wear a large visible official "No Kicks, Thanks" badge at all times, including when swimming, showering, and sleeping. They may also wish to avoid areas where large numbers of women are present, particularly at night. Some men may also wish to invest in assertiveness training, sympathetic female bodyguards, body armor, or sessions with a personal self-defense trainer to increase their ability to resist undesired kicks. As these methods have long been considered completely adequate for women who wish to avoid sexual predation we feel that they are all that is necessary here. Men choosing the "No Kicks, Thanks" option should be aware that they will be ridiculed publicly for their sexism and misogyny and their indefensible, self-serving, anti-female pursuit of their own selfish bodily autonomy. (It's not like getting kicked in the nuts does them any lasting harm, for heaven's sake.) Men who comply with all of the above and still end up getting kicked in the balls will be advised that they were asking for it, and that women can't be blamed for what happens when a man walks by with his crotch just hanging out there where it becomes a target of opportunity. (Besides, if a man weren't really willing, deep down, to get kicked in the balls, he wouldn't have stood still for it. Everyone knows that.) Thank you for your participation in the Open Source Swift Kick to the Balls Project." http://misia.livejournal.com/1055120.html?page=1&view=16828304#comments
Starting an Open-Source Project? I would like to start an open source project but I don't know what I need for that. I thought I can find some answers or something like a tutorial with a step by step description but I have not found that yet ^^ I think I will need things like -> a project page -> a bug-tracker -> continuous integration server (SVN, Documentation, Unit-Tests) Can anyone help me please? It's a PHP-Framework and everyone should be able to use it. I will also need a license, could anyone suggest one? I want to have the control of the project and be able to make it closed source when I want. Everyone should be able to use it, even for commercial use. Thanks in advance!
Where is a good site to find an open source project for a beginner java programmer? I only know Java, but for my computer science class I have to find an open source project and write some code for it, either writing the original code, revising it, or fixing a bug - but it has to be open source. I've checked on sourceforge already, and most of those projects are beyond my skill level, but if there is something there please post the project info link. I know loops(while, for, for-each), classes for memory storage(arrays, arraylists, trees, linkedlists, etc.), conditionals(if, else, else-if), some writing to files(bufferedreader, etc.), and I know a lot about the basic classes and primitives(Strings, ints, doubles,etc.). If its something beyond that, I can probably learn it though. Thanks!
How do I start contributing to Open Source projects? I am currently looking for open source software projects but I don't know where to start. I am open to learning any new languages for the projects. I'm pretty much looking to gain experience in programming. I have a background in C, PHP, SQL, HTML/XHTML, and CSS. I am open to any suggestions.
How to obtain design diagrams from open source projects? I am trying to learn better design techniques, partly read the GoF book on design patterns, and I am looking forward to understanding these concepts better. Everyone has told me that open source projects are beneficial in trying to learn these patterns. My question is, how can I get UML/other design diagrams from these projects? (I don't see them anywhere in the code repository, if you do, paste a link). Thanks

How easy is it to get open source software projects funded? If there is a gap in the open source software world for a particular application/system, is it generally possible to find companies/public organisations to help fund the creation of that project if someone is willing to coordinate / manage the project? Does anyone have any examples of projects initiated in this way? I'm thinking of a scale of project larger than a Google summer of code.
Looking for an Open Source PHP Project? Im looking for an open source PHP Project to contribute to. Im relatively good at PHP Programming. How many open source projects are listed at Sourceforge.net? I searched the site and could not find it. I need a referenenceable source for the number of open source projects. It doesn't necessarily have to be from Sourceforge. That was all I could think of. However, it must be from a source I can quote in a research paper.
Looking for open source Linux dev opportunities? I am an embedded SW developer looking for open source Linux projects on the internet that may provide development opportunities to a newbie to Linux development (drivers, network, anything). Ideally, projects that may be on the lookout for volunteer developers (don't need money). More sites such as sourceforge, kernelnewbies with several ongoing projects to choose from would work well. Please list multiple leads if possible. Sites catering to linux are priority. Thanks!

I have an open source PHP 5 project, where can I host it? Hey, I have this project written in PHP 5, of which I want to host a demo online. Now I tried uploading it to SourceForge, but they only support PHP 4 so it doesn't work. Is there another host that allows me to upload a demo of this product free of charge? Thanks in advance.
Why people contribute to open source software projects? The question is the main issue of my dissertation. I am studying motivation and reasons for participating in a project for free -(its not only software developers and programmers). I find this a very intersting socio-technological subject that proves the effectiveness of unpaid motivation in high-capitalistic world economy.
Can a company profit from open-source work? Let's say you have an open source community or project and you create something that's pretty awesome. Would a for profit company be able to take advantage of all the work that was done for free and implement it into a product to make money? Thanks in advance.
