How to earn money through open source software? I know all the positives of open source software, but what I am asking is this. Is it possible to make money out of it? If yes, how? If it isn't possible, then can we hope for a future where all software will be open source? I doubt there will be many people wanting to "work" for free. Would it attract less people to software development? How will it affect software companies?
What are the benefits of open source software model to original software writers? I am interested in what the benefits of open software model are to original software writers (not users). I more or less understand the concept from users standpoint (they can modify it, just like Linux, etc.) What I would like to know is what would a developer gain by releasing his software into community. He cannot charge for it anymore, even if he still holds IP rights like patents. Charging for support, not licenses? Quick market penetration? What else? Thanks.
How do developers make money from free or open source software? I'm talking about good applications or web-based software like CMSs - how do they make money if the item is free or open source... How do they stop people ripping them off or taking the project in the wrong direction? what license should I get to make the most out of something I hope to write?
How easy is it to get open source software projects funded? If there is a gap in the open source software world for a particular application/system, is it generally possible to find companies/public organisations to help fund the creation of that project if someone is willing to coordinate / manage the project? Does anyone have any examples of projects initiated in this way? I'm thinking of a scale of project larger than a Google summer of code.
How do I use a make file or compile the source codes for open source software? I really like using open source software (OSS). However, often times there are no binaries, precompiled installation programs or the executable program itself. Instead the sources, the files that contain the module files or the source codes, are provided with a few files called "make files". How do I use a "make file" or compile the source codes for OSS?
How to redistribute open source software? Yeah, so how do I redistribute open source software. Like GIMP or any other open source software. I want to redistribute it by using my own installer. I am working on a project and need help.
How to start an open source software project? I have a software idea. In talking with some people, I feel that there will be a lot of interest in this software. I want to use the open source community to create this software. I know that I can host the project on www.sourceforge.net, but how do I get developers to work on it? How do I manage the process, releases, QA etc? I only have an idea and no hands on software development experience. How will this process work? If you can share your experience, it will be great.
How does Open Source Software Business model work? How do the developers get paid if nobody buys the software, just get it free, and that too with source code? I can understand it about amateur software developers. But I recently heard that Sun is coming out with Open Source Unix this year. How will they profit from this? If not, how will they survive?
Can open source software be produced by a software house? Hi, 1. Is linux packaged, marketed and supported by SUN or IBM open sourced or proprietary? 2. Under what circumstances will Win 2008 server be called an "open source"? 3. Name some of the prominent proprietary software available today. 4. Are mainframes always proprietary? Hope you can help me understand these issues...
If communism is a flawed theory of incentives, why does open-source software work well, but Windows doesn't? Open-source software, for those who still use Windows, is free, non-proprietary software that is open for all to use and improve. How could a public, open-source good be so good if critiques of communism are correct? The Soviet Union was really existing communism, not true communism (read your Marx, people!). The Soviet Union was like Microsoft, a monopoly posing as a good guy. By the way, Microsoft's monopolisitic practices are why you pay so much for such a poor quality. Businesses who buy IBM servers and supercomputers get along fine with their open-source software. check your facts!

How does open-source software survive? I understand that proprietary software companies charge fees for licenses and access to their product, and in that way, they support their development and continued existence, but open-source software does not do that. How is it that open-source software continues to be developed and perfected without a revenue stream? Or, is there a revenue stream of which I am unaware?

How do you manage "open source" software programs? I'm planning to open source my software program within my organization. I'm hoping that people will develop new features or correct bugs and share their development with everyone else on a "Shared Drive". How are all the different versions managed ? I can see the whole thing getting out of control : ie too many versions causing confusion or taking up too much memory in the shared drive.
What is a good source for research on Open Source software? I'm looking for 2 magazines, 1 book, 1 academic journal, plus online source(s). I'm writing a 6 page paper, so if you have any idea where I might find these, let me know about it. Oh, and my paper is about whether people should use open or closed source for home or business. I'd prefer a book or magazine source, since it's easy to find online ones.
What is the main difference between Free and Open Source Software? I know that they've got different ideologies, but what is the essential difference? I think that Open Source can be a bit more restrictive (e.g. you can keep derivatives of your work from being sold), is that true? Are there any other, more general differnces? I don't mean 'free' as in 'free beer' or something. I'm talking about free software, based on the principles of freedom and stuff.

How do creator's of open source software make money? My husband asked me this question last night while looking at a really cool software release. So I began to wonder myself. Do the coder's make money? Will they eventually charge for its use once people love it, or sell the rights and then charge current users? Just curious if anyone knows. Thanks-- Thanks to both contributors for the informative responses!

How do you make software open source? Hello Everyone, I am an amateur programmer and I would like to make alot of my stuff open-source. How do I officially do that? Do I need to go through some legal channels to officially register it as open source, or do I need to simply say in my source code that I wish it to be open source?
Is there an open source software that will measure the effectiveness/strength of the passwords? I would like to read password from a file in our system and check their effectiveness and warn the users that have not so strong passwords to change. even ones based on text input would be good for now. Thanks for all the responses. What i want is a program that can take the passwords from a list and tell me how secure they are. I have beleived from the begining and from experience got to know that open source program not being as good as the paid ones is a myth. I would prefer a program that i can deploy and it lists me all the users in the list and how secure/insecure their passwords are.
Looking for open source remote desktop software? For a school project i have to create a distance learning training session. I messed around with using tightvmc along with skype and camstudio to make some small tutorial videos. Tightvmc is ok but I would like to control the desktop of the person im training as opposed to just letting him view mine. Any suggestions of any open source software for this? Also any information on any open source software that might be useful for distance training would be appreciated too. Thanks
