differences between webkit and khtml?

I know that apple forked khtml, but what did apple even do? like did they make it faster or something and should they get credit for developing webkit?

1. They did significant development work on it. They should get credit for contributing to the development of it, but to ignore the work of the KHTML developers would be somewhat rude.
